A document can come in many forms, but is essentially a record of a physical action. A recording not only records the sounds that were made, but the desire to record them. Likewise a piece of handwriting can not only be read, but also seen as a visual pattern. Tonina Matamalas work explores this theme of perception in physical experience and memory.

By uncovering other forms of a space we also bring to light its mutability, calling to attention the textures of the spaces that we inhabit and in which our memories live. The intersection of time and place allows us to explore the physical experience of retaining a piece of something that’s lost. Not to say that an object or space has one true original way of being or interpretation, but that its former way of existence is no more. While the choice to record and action or image can be made and at times a place can be selected, time and the experience of it in memory are far less controllable. So, an awareness of time is also a coming to terms with its agency.
